The Department of Justice (DOJ) has brought charges against Binance more than five months after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) accused the exchange and its CEO, Zhao, of providing false information to regulators about its operations. The SEC filed 13 charges in the federal case. In the SEC filing, it is alleged that Zhao and Binance played a significant role in directing the business operations of the trading entity and offering crypto-related services to the Binance.US platform. The latter claims to be an independent exchange, as mentioned in the SEC filing.
In late March, the U.S. Commodity Futures and Trading Commission (CFTC) also filed a lawsuit against Binance, Zhao, and its Chief Compliance Officer, Samuel Lim, citing alleged violations of trading and derivatives rules.
Binance has been in the spotlight for various reasons over the past year, including comments from Zhao that reportedly contributed to the downfall of FTX, a former top competitor. In April, Binance.US, the American counterpart, terminated its $1.3 billion deal to acquire the assets of crypto broker Voyager Digital, citing a “hostile and uncertain regulatory climate.”
In August, Checkout.com severed ties with Binance due to concerns about the crypto firm’s alleged issues with anti-money laundering, sanctions, and compliance controls. Binance’s spokesperson, at the time, stated disagreement with Checkout’s stated reason for termination and mentioned considering legal options.
